Kanaka Boats Is A Comin'

Another fascinating book by Paul Dillon a Sunshine Coast based writer whose other many works include Queensland Native Police, Red Centre Dead Centre. He also practised as a barrister in the Criminal Courts of Queensland.

He said little had been written about the early exploits of colonial Queenslanders on the marine frontier of the South Pacific. This book identifies the marine incidents arising during the 1600 passages of labour vessels between Queensland and the South Sea Islands.

More than 60,000 islanders came as guest workers, with many happy to return to get more trade goods. Labour vessels regularly left the ports of Bundaberg and Maryborough.

With the federation of Australian colonies in 1901 the South Sea Island trade came to an end and the exodus began for islanders still on the canefields. Some went willingly with others preferring to remain.

Kanaka Walls – evidence of their valuable work can still be seen in locations around Bundaberg with their famous Kanaka Walls. Built from volcanic rocks from former volcano and Bundy's only hill, The Hummock, you'll find one at Mon Repos and Bargara's popular safe swimming area, The Basin, enclosed by volcanic rocks, and constructed by Kanakas. and Bargara's popular safe swimming area, The Basin, enclosed by volcanic rocks, and constructed by Kanakas.

The book is available from Dymocks in Bundaberg for $29.90 from The InHouse Bookstore email publishing@inhouseprint.com.au

We have three copies of this book to be won in our competition.
